Unison
The sculpture Unison dissolves the boundaries between the artist and her art. Marina Schwan wears the sculpture on her body, becoming an integral part of the artwork itself. In this unity, she reflects on the complex and often ambivalent relationship between herself and her artistic practice.
Unison is custom-made for the artist. The abstracted swan form has no feathers or wings; instead, it features an oval neck, two swan heads where fins would be, and a fin in place of a beak. Its surface is smooth and white.
Traditionally a symbol of aesthetic perfection, the swan is stripped down to its essence in Unison and reimagined as a new concept. This transformation shifts the focus away from the animal itself and toward the idea it represents — highlighting art’s power to abstract and reduce while still conveying meaning.
